Since attempting heating repairs can be dangerous, in many
instances work should only be undertaken by a qualified professional.
And certainly the money you've saved by doing your own heating repairs
will be of little benefit if a careless accident sends you to the
emergency room. For this reason, let the professional who is familiar
and experienced with technical safety work on your heating repairs.

Tips about your heating system
1 Protecting against pilot failure
If the pilot or igniter goes out, the thermocouple deprived of heat:
stops generating its heat-produced electricity. Without current,
the solenoid coil loses the magnetism that pulls down on the solenoid
valve. A spring then forces the valve upward to block an opening,
preventing gas from entering either the burner or pilot supply lines.
2 Igniting the pilot light
To relight the pilot, turn the gas cock to the "PILOT' setting
and hold down the reset button. This action forces the interrupter
to close the burner supply line. At the same time forcing the solenoid
valve down to open the pilot supply line. The pilot can now be safely
relit without the danger of accidentally igniting the burner as
well.
3 Activating the solenoid
As the pilot flame heats the thermocouple it becomes a tiny electric
generator by converting heat energy into electric current. That
current produces magnetism in the solenoid coil to hold the solenoid
valve open. With the reset button released and the gas cock turned
to ON, gas is now able to enter both supply lines.
How a thermostat stops a burner
The gas heater's primary control is a thermostat a two-part bar
linked to a valve on the burner supply line. The bar expands (arrow)
as water temperature raises releasing tension until a spring closes
the valve and shuts off the gas flow.
How a thermostat starts a burner
Cooling water causes the outer part of the thermostat to contract
(yellow at-row) and squeeze the inner part against the valve linkage,
pushing the valve open (white arrow) so that gas flows to the burner
(blue arrow). A smaller thermostat, wired to the solenoid, will
function as an emergency cutoff switch if heat rises excessively.
It is not mechanical like the main thermostat, but electrical a
bimetallic element that, when heated beyond safe limits, cuts off
current going to the solenoid. The solenoid valve then closes and
stops all gas flow. In old-fashioned thermostats and some modern
ones, the contacts are exposed to air and may become dirty. Dirt
can prevent contacts from closing completely and thus prevent a
thermostat from turning on a heating system. If you have an exposed-contact
thermostat, you should clean the contacts periodically. Even if
contacts are kept clean, they wear after long service and no longer
close properly; then the thermostat has to be replaced. Because
this older type of thermo stat is no longer made, consult your heating-supply
dealer about which modern model you need; it must be of the same
voltage rating as the old, and adaptable to the burner's stack control
or gas control Procedures for cleaning and replacing old thermo
stats are described below. The contacts of most thermostats now
being made are sealed in glass enclosures and cannot become dirty.
But the wall on which a thermostat is mounted may be jarred and
the thermostat thrown out of calibration. In that event, the thermostat's
contacts will not close when room temperature drops to the preset
point. But with care, you can calibrate a modern thermostat yourself.
